Can You Hear the Shofar Calling?

On this day, the voice of the shofar also can also be heard in the voices of young climate activists like Greta Thunberg, Jamie Margolin and countless others, who are calling on the world to WAKE UP, REPENT, and RETURN, for the sake of our planet and humanity. This is such powerful timing for a Climate Strike... just as we in the Jewish community are preparing to celebrate the birthday of the world. May this be the year when we all hear the call and allow ourselves to be transformed!

As we move through the month of Elul, the shofar calls to us each day... WAKE UP, REPENT, RETURN.

Sometimes the shofar sounds like the ram's horn that it is -- with its piercing blasts and broken cries. Listening to its sound can open our hearts, bring us to a place of personal introspection, and help us improve as individuals and within our families and communities. Many other traditions associated with the month of Elul help to support these goals too, and this email serves as a P.S.A. that now is the time of year to begin the process, if you haven't already done so! In Elul, it is customary to spend time looking inward, to recite selichot (special penitential prayers) beginning this Saturday night, to approach those we have wronged asking for their forgiveness, and to visit cemeteries where loved ones are buried to honor those whose memories inspire us to live lives of purpose.

On all of these levels and in all of these ways, I hope that the month of Elul is indeed fulfilling its intended role, as a time of preparation for the upcoming chagim. We look forward to celebrating them with you.
