Havdalah Club
This special evening program for 3rd-5th graders (eight - eleven year olds) focuses on the inherited Jewish tradition of dialogue and debate. Over the course of a pizza dinner participants study a Jewish value - considering their personal stance and opinion. Through the dissection of Jewish text and commentary, kids become more informed, and are able to re-evaluate their opinion and relationship to that Jewish value. Considered one of our sacred youth spaces, Havdalah club is a combination of fun, community, debate and learning all topped off with a Havdalah ritual to conclude each session. *Pizza provided by Kavana.
This program is offered as a series, as consistent participation helps build a sense of community among this cohort. As series participants, we assume we will see registrants each session, unless told otherwise.

Maxine Alloway
Maxine has served as an educator at Kavana for many years, helping us to develop our educational approach. She currently leads our monthly Havdalah Club and teaches over the High Holidays. Outside of her work with us, Maxine is a faculty member in the University of Washington's College of Education, working primarily with soon-to-be elementary school teachers.
Rachel Osias
Rachel Lena Osias, or “RLO '' serves as Kavana’s Director of Education. RLO strives to build communities in which teaching, learning and the pursuit of educational equity are derived from challenging systemic norms and embracing the identities, experiences and stories of all individuals. Her exploration of Judaism and Jewish identity is cultivated through question-asking, relationship-building, story-telling, and play. RLO's professional and educational background has been an intentional interweaving of environmental sciences, educational equity, social and environmental justice, and experiential education. She holds a B.S. in Environmental Science, Technology, and Policy; a K-5th grade Teaching Credential; and a Master’s Degree in Urban Environmental Education.
Yuli B.
Yuli is currently a junior at Lincoln High school in Wallingford. Last year, she spent a semester abroad in Israel! She has been a learner at Kavana since Middle School and is now a part of the High School cohort. Yuli enjoys spending time playing sports like softball and ultimate frisbee as well as running along the Burke Gilman trail. She also loves thrifting and jewelry making. She is excited to share her love of Judaism and finding community with the Moadon Yeladim kids!
Noah S.
Noah is excited to join Havdalah Club as a teacher for a fourth year! Originally from Chicago, Noah and his partner Sydney moved to Seattle in 2022 and love calling the PNW their new home. For fun, he enjoys exploring the region, hiking, birding, wood working, and roller skating around Green Lake. Outside of Kavana, Noah works at Fred Hutch Cancer Center as a Philanthropy Project Manager. He is looking forward to playing games, discussing Jewish values, and eating Pagliacci pizza with the kids in Havdalah Club this year!
Alphie A.
Alphie is a Junior at Lincoln High School and is thrilled to be working in an official teaching position! He has been attending Kavana's programming for his whole life (you probably know his mom!), and has volunteered at Kavana over the last 3 years. He also works with kids in several other contexts, including through an internship with the Adaptive and Inclusive Movement (AIM). Outside of his participation in Kavana and work with kids, he does theater and dance, and if he's not doing one of those things, he's probably crocheting. He's excited to bring both his positive energy and his Jewish knowledge into Moadon!
